Helshoogte Pass in Western Cape

Anyone traveling to the Cape Winelands should take the chance to pass over the Franschhoek Valley. This road stretches between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Covered with vineyards and wineries, the area boasts plenty to do. The wine selection may be grand but it is the mountain views that will leave you wanting to drive through again and again. Also, if wine tasting isn’t on your vacation to-do list, the Helshoogte Pass also boasts a berry farm for seasonal picking.

Bain’s Kloof Pass in Western Cape

If you find yourself amazed by the local fauna, we suggest driving the Bain’s Kloof Pass. The 30km pass is home to over 270 species of plant life. This pass, which connects Wellington and Ceres, has been considered a national monument since 1980. The winding path travels up and over the mountain, giving you lots of photography opportunities.

Meirings Poort in Western Cape

If you already love to explore the outdoors, then the drive on Meirings Poort may be for you. Despite being slammed with landslides and floods; this road is said to be one of the most beautiful in South Africa. Along the ride you’ll come upon a visitor center where you can park and hike along the trail all the way to the De Rust Waterfall.

The Panaroma Route in Mpumalanga

Great views are a guarantee – just look at its name! Right near Kruger National Park, this route stretches along the Blyde River Canyon for 33km. You’ll see waterfalls, mountain peaks and canyon views. What could be better than taking in all of nature on the way to the park.

Sani Pass in Kwa-Zulu Natal

Sani Pass is the most dangerous to drive but the most rewarding if you do. Bordering Lesotho in the west, this trek requires a 4×4 and is only drivable in good conditions. If you’ve driven off road before then this may be the route for you. Unparalleled views and the thrill of doing something not many try await anyone who drives the Sani Pass.
