While South Africa offers some of the best wildlife to see, their underwater life is just as fascinating. Snorkelling and diving can immerse you in a world of sea life and coral only few ever get to see. Even the smallest tide pool can offer a great opportunity of snorkelling. If you want to explore all the ocean has to offer, here are some choice places to go snorkelling or diving.
Aliwal Shoal
On the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, this area is known for sightings of tooth sharks. A 40 minutes drive south of Durban, the waters here are full of sponges, soft and hard corals, and cold water fish. If you feel up for the adventure, the area is home to an interesting shipwreck dive. Make sure to bring your underwater camera!
Protea Banks
Just off Shelly Beach, Protea Banks is a great destination for those who love sharks. South of Port Shepstone, snorkelers can see Zambezi tiger and hammerhead sharks through the summer and ragged tooth sharks in the winter.
Cape Town
If you can handle the cold waters, you’ll want to snorkel and dive in Cape Town. Cape Town has the most beautiful kelp forest that will make you want to stay in the water forever. You’ll be swimming with sharks, Cape Fur Seals, whales and penguins too! Hout Bay Harbour has many places to start your adventure and many groups that will show you the ropes if you’re a beginner.
We hope your underwater adventure goes swimmingly!
